Bladder Training

Bladder Training

Having problems with your bladder, when you often feel trouble controlling it, is a topic many people avoid. Many of them don’t want to talk about this with their doctor. But, scheduling the entire life around the bathroom near you is a much worse than a conversation with an expert. One of the solutions may be bladder training. This is the first treatment that a doctor will tell you to do. Basically, you will have to try to hold urine inside as long as possible. Eventually, you should be able to hold it longer and longer.

The bladder training is used to prevent involuntary loss of urine (urinary incontinence). This is the common problem among women in menopause or who had a childbirth. There are 4 types of urinary incontinence. They are:

  1. Urge incontinence makes you use the bathroom often because your bladder contracts even when it isn’t full.
  2. Stress incontinence, cause you to accidentally lose urine in a case of sudden pressure on your abdomen.
  3. Overflow incontinence is urinary leakage caused by emptying the bladder problem.
  4. Mixed incontinence is a mixture of urge and stress incontinence.

If your doctor is telling you that you should use bladder training, you must keep a ‘’bathroom diary.’’ There, you will make notes every time you feel the need to use the bathroom and when you leak. The first step is to determine how often you use the bathroom. Then, you add 15 minutes to that time. For example, if you go to the bathroom every half an hour, try to use it every 45 minutes, even if you don’t feel the urge to go. Then, try to graduate increase the time when you use it.
