One of the most interesting additions to a Green Shack is a living roof. It is also known as a green roof. The idea of having a vegetation on your roof is perfect. Beside this, a living roof is very useful for maintaining temperature. Water is stored into a living roof, so there is no need for watering the vegetation. Also, during the summer, a living roof will be responsible for lower temperature in your green shack. On the other side, during winter, it will be warmer. For example, during supper a living roof can store from 70% up to 90% of precipitation that falls on it. In winter, it can store between 25 and 40%.
In order to make a living roof, you will need: insulation (not needed), pond liner, root membrane, gravel, moisture blanket, wood chips, compost, top soil and plants. The materials go in this order! The first step is to make sure your roof is strong enough, so it can sustain this weight. If not, make it stronger. As always, it is better to hire a professional to make a living roof. You can choose plants that you want, just remember that all of them must have short roots and they should sustain without a lot of water (if you live in an area where there is no a lot of rain).
Other benefits of a living roof include: reducing the electromagnetic radiation (cause by wireless and mobile communication) by 99%, and they are useful against a fire. Because the soil is full with water, we can say that they are extremely useful against fire.
